Chapter 4:Northwest Staging Route
Thousands of American-made combat planes were thus ferried to the U.S.S.R.
Whitehorse airport, 15 October 1943. This is a rare view of Douglas A-20 "Boston" or "Havoc" bombers and Bell P-39 fighters. The fifth plane from the left is a single-engine Lockheed Vega from Alaska. In take-off position on the runway is an Alaskan Stinson Model "A" Trimotor. These planes were making a fuel stop while enroute to Fairbanks, Alaska to be picked up by Soviet pilots for use against Germany on the eastern front. Thousands of American-made combat planes were thus ferried to the U.S.S.R.
