Chapter 4:Northwest Staging Route
New hangars under construction at Whitehorse Airport
New hangars under construction at Whitehorse Airport October 15, 1943. The U.S. Army Air Force developed the west side (foreground) while the RCAF used the east side of the field during the war. The dark coloured planes on the tarmac are American planes being refueled on their way to Alaska and the U.S.S.R. Aircraft in the line-up include twin-engine Douglas A-20 Boston bombers and Bell P-39 Aircobra fighters. On the runway in the distance is an Alaskan Stinson Model "A" Trimotor. The U.S. Air Force ferried 7000 warplanes from U.S. factories to the European front in the U.S.S.R. Thus the Alaska Highway and Northwest Staging Route became the only transportation network to supply both the Pacific and the European front during World War II.
