Chapter 3:Impact of the Highway
Mrs. MacIntosh's Trading Post at Bear Creek
Mrs. MacIntosh's Trading Post at Bear Creek, a typical Alaska Highway trading post providing respite to weary travelers. Located near the 'Bear Creek' sign on the gravel highway, Mrs. MacIntosh’s sign announces her services: 'Rooms Cabin'. Beyond the gravel highway are the St. Elias foothills. After her husband died in 1939, Mrs. MacIntosh continued running the trading post until 1954. There are still posts like this, where meals and overnight accommodation can be obtained every 100-150 miles. Trading posts were an economic opportunity once the highway was opened to civilians. Services were needed for highway travelers to provide gas, food and lodging.
