Chapter 3:Impact of the Highway
George Blondin and Little Edward Blondin, Sheldon Lake, 1943.
George Blondin and Little Edward Blondin, Sheldon Lake, 1943. George Blondin, his father Edward Blondin, and Fred Andrew from Fort Norman in the Northwest Territories were hired by Guy Blanchet to find a route for the Canol Pipeline from Norman Wells over the Macmillan Pass to Ross River. They traveled with dogs, starting in the fall of 1942, with very little snow. This resulted in worn out toboggans by the time they reached Ross River. The Army supplied their dogs with an inadequate diet of cornmeal and lard, forcing the First Nation men to hunt for sheep, caribou and moose to provide adequate food to sustain themselves and their dogs.
