Chapter 2:Construction & Maintenance
Married August 1943 in Whitehorse
Not all relationships formed during the Alaska Highway construction were transitory. Zaza Manuel and Donald Duffy were married on August 7, 1943 in Whitehorse. Donald worked with the U.S. Public Roads Administration (with Personnel) in Whitehorse from 1942 to 1943. There he met Zaza who was working at the Whitehorse Inn. After their marriage they transferred for six months to Chicago, and then moved to Alaska where they operated "Duffy’s" Lodge at Old Slana from 1947-1952. They built a new lodge near Slana operating it from 1952-1971.
