Belle Desrosiers (nee Dickson) holding a food tray in Champagne, summer 1942. While most First Nations women kept to their traditional lifestyle during the construction of the Alaska Highway, some living near the highway started working for wages for the first time. They worked as launderers, cooks, cleaners, sewers and sold handicraft work to male highway workers.
