Unofficial views: Robert Hayes
Robert Hays came to the Yukon with the U.S. Army, 18th Engineers to construct the Alaska Highway in 1942. He ran one of the small Post Exchanges for Headquarters and Service Company, moving from camp to camp as the highway progressed from Whitehorse west towards the White River. His collection of 48 photographs and an eight page letter describing some of his activities in the Yukon was donated to Yukon Archives in 1976. Mr. Hays photographed everyday activities of the men, such as eating meals and sterilizing mess kits.
